Electrolytes aren't just for Summertime

Electrolytes aren't just for Summertime

No matter the temperature outside, we must be more aware of the need for proper hydration, but what's the impact of not doing it right?

When we become dehydrated, our bodies fatigue faster - we know that. But we may have less cushion for our joints, suffer more intestinal discomfort, and can make our hearts work harder to maintain proper blood pressure. The simple solution of drinking more water may not be the best answer. Why? Because water alone may dilute the electrolytes in your body.

Electrolytes are essential for basic life functions, especially allowing our nerves and muscles to work. Simply stated, without them, we would not function. The primary ones are sodium and potassium, but calcium and magnesium are also critical in those activities. These substances must remain in balance for our bodies to work effectively. Too much or too little negatively affects us.

This is not only a summertime concern. As we sweat, we lose electrolytes through our pores. This is the negative effect of dehydration. To prevent dilution, an electrolyte drink is a wise choice.

Whether it's powering through a 5k or tending to your garden, maintaining the proper fluid and electrolyte levels will help you finish strong.
